Roy's Birthplace -Skelmanthorpe - Yorkshire

If you're familiar with "Last of the Summer Wine", you'll notice Holmfirth not too far away, also Denby Dale, famous for giant pies!

Roy spent a very short time here; his childhood was mostly in Grantley, where his father was a chauffeur for the Ackroyds of Grantley Hall, and he lived in the West Lodge. Grantley village is still a beautiful place - we visited it a very short time ago.

See the Woodcock photo page for pictures of this period. The family moved to Harrogate around the time of the outbreak of WW2. Roy and his surviving brother* joined the forces, again, see the photos. Roy became a pilot and eventually flew supply planes from India (358 squadron based in Jessore), dropping men and supplies as far away as what was then Indo-China, now Vietnam and Cambodia; some of these trips were very long, as you can imagine, and potentially, dangerous, especially if a pilot was forced down into the jungle. He wasn't, thankfully, and returned to Harrogate, where he recommenced work in what was then the Air Ministry, later the Ministry of Defence. He met Margaret there as a very young recruit,in 1953, newly away from home. They never entirely lost touch, although Roy had a spell of work in Germany and Margaret moved to Hull, London and Falkirk, in a different branch of the Civil Service. They were married in 1962 and set up home, first in a flat in Harrogate, then in a house in Knaresborough; finally moving to Carlisle in 1972.

There are 2 children, Alison and Alastair and 1 grandchild, Amani - but you'll find their stories on other pages.

Link to Roy's Ancestry In 1852, there was a disastrous flood , when the Bilberry Reservoir burst its banks. A great many people were drowned, including two children of the Woodcock family. Read what happened.

Some almshouses were built to rehouse victims of the flood. I don't know if the family moved there immediately, but Mary Woodcock died there at the ripe old age of 93, on the anniversary of the flood, 5th February.

* Sadly, Harold was killed at Monte Cassino - he is buried at the military cemetery there.
